  Planning A Well Balanced Supper

In many families, supper is the 'family-time' meal, during which everyone eats together and discusses what they've been doing throughout the day. Okay, maybe that isn't the case so much anymore, but many people still make it the main meal of the day. Supper should at least be the most balanced meal of the three, even if it isn't quite the family meal that everyone once envisioned it to be.

This must be a well balanced meal, and it should provide enough substance to keep you satisfied through the evening, and allow you to sleep through the night without feeling hungry in the morning. But it shouldn't be too big either, since it's one meal you will not have a chance to 'work off'. This is a mistake many people make.

Some thoughts about supper planning

This is a meal that allows you to sample a wide variety from the various food groups. Here you will want to have a sampling of almost everything, categorically speaking, in order to have a complete meal. The meal does not have to be overly large, just have variety.

Remember that as with anything, moderation is the key. Just because it is frequently the largest meal doesn't mean you should gorge yourself at supper time. Smaller portions of a variety of foods is the most important thing, to allow for a good night’s sleep.

The three main groups that need to be included in the dinner meal are starches - like rice, pasta or potatoes - protein and vegetables. These three items should take up the same amount of space on your plate. That means you should not eat a pound of steak and two baby carrots. It needs to be balanced, could include a salad, fruit or a small and healthy-as-can-be dessert.

Don't eat too much or too late

However, again the portions should be on the small side and none should dominate the meal. It should contain approximately four ounces of each of the three main groups and then a small portion of either of the dessert items.

One last thing to be careful of with supper is timing. Here you need to consider how late you'll be eating. If you are usually eating later than 8 pm, you may want to reconsider. It is usually after this time that the body tends to slow down and does not allow for the proper digestion and metabolism of these foods. So make sure to eat a properly balanced and well-timed meal.
